More About Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement for women over 40 primarily focuses on managing the changes associated with perimenopause and menopause.

During this phase, women experience a natural decline in estrogen and progesterone levels, leading to various symptoms. Common issues include hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, sleep disturbances, weight gain, and thinning bones.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) aims to replenish these declining hormone levels, helping to alleviate these symptoms and improve overall quality of life during and after the menopausal transition.

Potential Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy

The benefits of hormone replacement therapy for women over 40 can be transformative. HRT is particularly effective in reducing menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats, which are among the most discomforting aspects of menopause.

Hormone Replacement Therapy can also aid in improving sleep quality, mood stability, and sexual function. Additionally, HRT has been shown to help in maintaining bone density, thereby reducing the risk of osteoporosis, a common concern post-menopause.

Importantly, hormone replacement should be approached with personalised medical guidance as there can be associated risks including a potential increased rate of some cancers (including breast, ovarian, and womb cancer), blood clots,  and bleeding.

To be considered for HRT women must be up to date with their Cervical Screening Test (previously called Pap Smears), and ideally having regular mammograms if over the age of 50, or at least doing regular self examination. Patient's may not be suitable for HRT if they have an active cancer or previous cancer.

A healthcare professional can assess individual needs, monitor the body's response to the therapy, and adjust dosages accordingly, to try to maximise safety and effectiveness while reducing possible risks.
